Kodiak track teams shine in Edmonton

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks put in a multi-medal performance at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference indoor track championships last weekend.

The Kodiaks claimed six medals at the event held at MacEwan University in Edmonton Friday and Saturday.

Those totals earned the Kodiaks women’s team a third-place finish and the men a tie for fourth.

Leading the Kodiaks medal haul was rookie Sophia Nowicki, who earned four medals.

The student from Bragg Creek won two silver and two bronze medals to finish third in points among female competitors.

Third-year Kodiak Kayla Enders also won an individual medal, winning bronze in the 600m race with a time of 1:42.36, one of three runners who crossed the finish line 0.37 seconds apart, placing second, third and fourth.

Enders also just missed the podium in the 300m, finishing fourth in 43.60 seconds.

The Kodiaks men’s medal came in the 4x400m relay as the men’s team of anchor Dayton Jans, John Krause, Tristan Jochems and Kayden Halladay ran a time of 3:41.44 to win the bronze medal.

Jans narrowly missed out on a pair of individual medals, finishing fourth in the 300m (37.18 seconds) and fifth in the 600m (1:30.35).

Nowicki took the silver medal in the 3,000m event with a time of 10:39.08 and the 1,500m (4:59.64). Her time in that event put Nowicki less than seventenths of a second back of the goldmedal finisher.

She added another individual medal in the 1,000m in a time of 3:09.42 for the bronze.

Nowicki then teamed up with Enders, Brooklyn Vogel and Janelle Graham on the women’s 4x400-metre relay team that earned the bronze medal in a race that came down to a photo finish.

The SAIT Trojans were originally awarded the bronze medal, but a review showed both teams tied down to the one-thousandth of a second in 4:22.036, giving both teams a medal.

Enders ran the anchor lap of the relay.
