Probe students to read sequel for One School, One Book project
Students at Dr. Gerald B. Probe Elementary School finally learned which book they will be reading this year for their One School, One Book project.
And from the response of the students assembled in the gym for the event kickoff on Tuesday afternoon, they couldn’t be happier.
The students will be reading “The Wild Robot Escapes” by New York Times bestselling author Peter Brown. The book is a sequel to the wildly popular “The Wild Robot,” which the students read last year.
The event normally takes place in January, but Brown’s book publication was delayed from January to March.
Because of the popularity of the first book, organizers decided they would wait for the sequel.
“We got special permission for the book to arrive in our school prior to the release date, as long as we didn’t release it until the release date,” said Michelle Dimnik, learning support teacher at Probe.
The announcement was made through a video made by Brown, after speaking briefly about last year’s book.
“The Wild Robot Escapes” continues the adventure of Robot Roz who, after finding herself stranded on a remote island and being forced to adapt and learn from the animal inhabitants, finds herself facing off against the challenges of the civilized world as she tries to make it home.
Families are encouraged to enjoy the book with their child, and there are other activities planned to coincide with One School, One Book.
There will be a number of ways for families to be involved via social media. There may also be continued participation from the book’s author.
“Peter Brown got so involved in our project last year,” said Dimnik. “We thought it was a great way for us to get involved with him again.
“He’s really all about social media and promoting Roz and her story that way.”
The school was the first in Canada to take part in the annual event 11 years ago. Dimnik said the value of the program stretches beyond promoting a love of reading in children.
“It’s such an incredible program for building community,” she said. “It’s so enjoyable to be able to sit down and read a book as a family.”
