Magrath, Cardston fall in 4A boys semis

The Cardston Cougars suffered a heartbreak­ing loss in the semifinals of the Alberta Schools Athletic Associatio­n 4A boys’ basketball provincial­s Friday at Medicine hat High School.

Cougars were edged 79-78 by top-seeded Calgary Bishop O’Byrne in the semifinals.

South Zone champion Magrath Zeniths were defeated 89-55 by No. 2 seed Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans.

Earlier in the day, the Cougars downed the host Medicine Hat Mohawks 88-57 in quarter-final play while Bishop O’Byrne downed the LCI Rams 58-52 to start Friday’s action.

Cardston and Magrath will play today for the bronze medal.

The Rams rebounded to defeat the Mohawks 82-62 later Friday in consolatio­n play.

In 4A girls provincial action, also at Hat High, South Zone champion Raymond Comets fell 6857 to Edmonton Jasper Place in the quarter-finals Friday.

Comets recovered to beat Calgary Western Canada 78-75 Friday afternoon and will play the LCI Clippers today for fifth place.

The Clippers lost 78-72 to St. Albert in the quarters, but rebounded with a 74-70 win over the Magrath Pandas Friday afternoon to advance and face the Comets.

Magrath lost 66-53 to Calgary Bishop Carroll Friday morning before Friday afternoon’s loss to LCI.

3A provincial­s in Cochrane

The Taber W.R. Myers Rebels girls advanced to the gold medal game following a 77-49 win over Wetaskiwin Composite. They’ll play St. Peter the Apostle from Spruce Grove at 5:30 p.m. today.

The W.R. Myers Rebels boys were defeated 7759 by Cochrane High School and will play for 11th today at 9 a.m. against Calgary Bowness.

2A Boys provincial­s at Claresholm

Host Willow Creek Composite Cobras were in the late-game semifinal on Friday against Strathcona Christian.

Cobras advanced to the semifinal by upending Calgary Webber Academy 102-56 earlier Friday.

In other quarter-final play Friday, Immanuel Christian Eagles were defeated 82-59 by La Crete while Kainai Warriors fell 113-74 to Edmonton Millwoods Christian, who advanced to the gold medal game with a 109-102 win over La Crete.

2A Girls provincial­s at Kainai

Immanuel Christian Eagles were battling for a spot in today’s 7:30 p.m. gold medal game as they took on Parkland Composite in the late-game semifinal on Friday.

Immanuel advanced to the semis with a 71-43 in over Glenmary School in the quarter-finals while host Kainai Lady Warriors were edged 5453 by Parkland Composite.

Kainai will play Glenmary School in the consolatio­n semifinal this morning.

Coaldale Kate Andrews Pride will play J.C. Haryk of Hanna for ninth place today after a 7471 win over Calgary Christian on Friday.

1A Boys and Girls provincial­s at Lacombe

It will be an all-South final for the 1A Girls championsh­ip between the Stirling Lakers and Foremost Forettes.

Stirling posted a pair of victories Friday, starting with a 65-37 win over Parkland Immanuel Christian before topping Hines Creek Composite 81-59 in the semifinals.

Foremost opened the day with a 59-38 win over Marwayne Jubilee School before defeating Grand Trunk High 67-57 in the semifinal.

It marks the second straight weekend the teams have met in a championsh­ip game with Stirling defeating Foremost for the South Zone title.

In boys’ play, Stirling Lakers will play for the bronze medal today against Central Alberta Christian. Lakers fell 89-75 to Rosemary School in Friday’s semifinal after previously defeating Ecole la Rose Sauvage 73-49 in the quarter-finals.

Nanton J.T. Foster Knights was edged 78-70 by Central Alberta Christian in the quarters on Friday and will play Breton High in the consolatio­n semifinal this morning.
