Making the most of St. Patrick’s Day

- Jonathan Jarvie

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! It’s the one day of the year that brings out a little bit of Irish in all of us.

Before you start the festivities with a pint of green beer (or two!), stop by the Lethbridge Public Library to find out how you can bring your St. Patrick’s Day up to the next level.

To kick off your celebrations, why not browse the library’s collection of cookbooks featuring Irish recipes? Trust me, they are not all about potatoes. For those of us who prefer print books, check out “An Irish Country Cookbook,” featuring many traditional dishes from Ireland. For those of us who have gone digital, we have “The Complete Irish Pub Cookbook,” with tons of delicious Irish pub favourites, available on hoopla. And for those of us who love our spuds, we have “The Totally Potato Cookbook,” because you can never go wrong with a potato.

What St. Patrick’s Day party is complete without some traditional Irish music? Log on to hoopla on either your tablet or computer to find a variety of Irish tunes. From the Irish Tenors to traditional Irish ballads, you will have no shortage of choice when it comes to making a playlist.

On a day when everyone you know will be trying to impress with their best Irish brogue, take it a step further and dazzle your guests by learning to speak Irish. Mango Languages, free with your library card, has two courses available where you can learn Irish: a general conversation class, and a class geared specifically towards St. Patrick’s Day.

To have the luck of the Irish on your side, visit the library and make the most of St. Patrick’s Day.
