Spring Reuse Rendezvous set for Saturday

- Dave Mabell dmabell@lethbridgeherald.com

Do we like “Free”? City residents will see that sign on many streets Saturday, for the first springtime “Reuse Rendezvous.”

Families are being invited to place any “gently used” but no longer needed items on their front lawn or driveway, accompanied by a big “Free” label.

At the same time, people who need an extra table, chair, whatever, will cruise neighbourhood streets to see if any are on offer.

“For the past two years, many participants have requested a spring date for Reuse Rendezvous in addition to the weekend in September,” explains Kathleen Sheppard, executive director with Environment Lethbridge.

“We hope that this spring event will be just as successful as the fall one so that we can continue to offer two events during the year.”

The following day — Earth Day — residents will also have an opportunity take discarded electronic gear — computers, TV sets, cellphones, electronic games — to one of two drop-off locations across town.

On Saturday evening, Sheppard says, owners should take any remaining items back inside. But participants can improve their chances of their item being taken by posting them on an online map hosted by Environment Lethbridge. More details can also be found at that site: www.environmentlethbridge.ca/reuse.

“Reuse Rendezvous is the perfect opportunity to declutter and pass on items that you no longer need,” Sheppard says.

“It’s also a great opportunity to find new-to-you treasures. For students leaving for the year, it’s the perfect way to rehome unwanted items and keep them out of the landfill.”

On Sunday, unwanted electronics can be taken to a temporary drop-off location on 3 Avenue South, just west of the Mint carwash, or next to the Save-on-Foods store on Highlands Boulevard West. EcycleDrive volunteers say they’ll be able to recycle, refurbish or repurpose the items instead of taking them to the landfill.
