Man accused in downtown stabbing has charges stayed

One of several men accused of stabbing of another man downtown earlier this year no longer faces prosecution in connection with the incident.

A single charge of aggravated assault against Jesse Dean Davidson was stayed by the Crown Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court. A stay of proceedings is a ruling that halts further legal process, although the Crown can lift the stay within a year.

Davidson was charged with several others after a man was attacked and stabbed Jan. 30 at the London Road Esso/Mac’s store in the 700 block of 6 Avenue South.

During a hearing last week in Lethbridge court, one of the accused, 18-year-old July Red Crow of Lethbridge, admitted he was the one who stabbed the victim three or four times because the man had threatened another person with a knife the day before. Red Crow, who was caught on surveillance video, was sentenced to two years in prison but credited two months for time he spent in custody after his arrest.

The victim was taken to the Chinook Regional Hospital, then to Calgary where he required surgery. Court was told the stabbing victim has since been released from hospital and doesn’t appear to be suffering any permanent effects of the attack.

Two other accused, Jonathan Holy White man, 35, and Rodney Kelsey Bottle, 35, also face a charge of aggravated assault. Both men are scheduled to be in court today.
