Roll into cycling season with Bike Fest

- Tyler Stewart

I don’t want to jinx it, but spring might finally be here.

It’s been an unusually long and miserable winter season, even for the more die-hard cold-weather cyclists. Given the past two months of weekly snowstorms, it’s been a struggle to get the tires rolling on pavement until just recently. But to give you motivation to get back pedalling, there’s some pretty exciting news to get those tires pumped and ready to roll.

BikeBridge will be presenting the first Lethbridge Bike Fest, running through the end of May into the first week of June, with a wide variety of family-friendly cycling events for riders of all ages and abilities. We’ve strived to bring together all sectors of our small-yet-mighty local cycling community to showcase the many different ways you can have a fun time on two wheels in Lethbridge. From mountain biking, to road cycling, movie nights, a bike scavenger hunt and more, there’s something for everyone!

It’s easy to dismiss cyclists as a fringe or “special interest” group, but one of the main goals on Lethbridge Bike Fest is to show just how rich and diverse the Lethbridge cycling community is. With no less than four different clubs in town, there’s a great group of people for you to get rolling with, regardless of your preferred method of pedalling. And even if you’re not wanting to get in the saddle, there are free movie nights with great feature films to enjoy if you’d rather just watch someone else get their sweat on. Visit

www.YQLbikefest.ca for a full listing of events around town between May 18 and June 3, and join in on the fun!

This means the timing couldn’t be better if you’re looking to get yourself a new ride, or upgrade to something a little speedier, with the Alberta Bike Swap happening this Saturday. This amazing non-profit has been running events across the province

since 2011 and offer a great opportunity to buy a used bike (or sometimes even new ones) at a great price. Everything for sale is checked out before hitting the racks, so you know it’s not stolen, and that it’s a sturdy machine you can ride away on that afternoon. Consignment runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with sales opening at 2:30 p.m., all happening at Lethbridge Exhibition Park North Pavilion. Visit www.albertabikeswap.ca for

more info and details.

And last but not least, our biggest-ever Jane’s Ride is coming up on Friday, May 4, with six different guest speakers taking us on a cruise through history down the new Bike Boulevard, around Henderson Lake and ending at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden to cap it all off with a hot cup of tea. Visit

to stay up to date on this event and everything else we’ve got coming this spring!
