Hurricanes’Cozens repeats rookie honours

Dylan Cozens has been named the Western Hockey League Rookie of the Month. Again. The WHL announced Tuesday the forward for the Lethbridge Hurricanes has gotten the nod as WHL Rookie of the Month for April.

It’s the second time Cozens has earned the rookie honour, having also won Rookie of the Month for September/October.

The native of Whitehorse, selected by the Hurricanes in the first round and 19th overall in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, had four goals and seven points and a plus-two rating in 11 games in April as the Hurricanes advanced to Game 6 of the Eastern Conference final before losing to the Swift Current Broncos.

In the Conference final against the Broncos, Cozens recorded recording two multi-point games, one of which was a multigoal performanc­e in Game 3 in a 5-1 win.

Cozens finished the playoffs with seven goals and 13 points in 16 games.

The 17-year-old has already racked up 28 games of WHL playoffs experience, putting up 21 points (10 goals and 11assists).

In the regular season, Cozens scored 22 goals and 53 points in 57 games, which included eight power-play goals, one short-handed goal, and four game-winning goals.

Cozens is in contention for the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s Rookie of the Year. In late-March, he was named the 2017-18 Eastern Conference Rookie of the Year.
