Public Works Week recognizes efforts

- Tim Kalinowski LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Mayor Chris Spearman marked National Public Works week Wednesday by paying tribute to the hard-working employees of the City’s Parks department.

“We honour the work that our employees do,” said Spearman, who took part in a ceremonial flower planting beside the Galt Museum to drive home his message.

“The Parks department, in terms of flower maintenance and bed maintenance, we have nine employees for the next two months who will be planting flowers in 13 parks. So we see the different flower beds here right beside the Galt Museum, but you will also see the rose gardens and flower beds over at Henderson Lake Park.

“We maintain the brewery garden and enhance it ... the park along 13th Street near the Adams Ice Centre, and all other parks throughout the city. What we want to do is make Lethbridge an attractive place to live in, and add those beautiful floral components many cities have. With Parks they are also maintaining the trees and pathways.”

Spearman said Public Works employees are the glue which holds the city together, and they are simply not given enough credit for the job they do.

“There are a lot of things that happen in the city that people take for granted, such as roadway maintenance,” he said. “All of it takes people to do that.”
