Head-shave event helps those with addictions

- Dave Mabell LETHBRIDGE HERALD

With the help of caring people, a Lethbridge woman says she was able to beat her addiction to alcohol and drugs.

Now Shawna Clark is fighting another battle, and a local group is supporting her once again.

But the funds raised will go to a different southern Alberta program.

Staff and clients at Streets Alive were having their heads shaved Wednesday, raising funds for others facing the challenges of addiction and ill health.

“Three months ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and now I’m fighting again,” Clark says.

When battling her addictions, she says, people at the Streets Alive mission never gave up on her.

“The mission gave me hope when I was hopeless and believed in me until I could believe in myself.”

Now Clark is working at Streets Alive, lending encouragement to others who are in a similar situation.

“I want to show those who are still struggling with addiction and recovery that even when we struggle, you work through things — and life can get better.”

In her role, Clark says, she now works with women who live in a safe home operated as a Streets Alive outreach. At the same time, she’s receiving chemotherapy at the hospital.

But proceeds of Wednesday’s hair-shaving event will go to support another facility, the detox centre in Fort Macleod, she explains.

“That’s where I went to clean up,” she said. “I know how people struggle with drugs and alcohol.”
