Gilbert Paterson Middle School is working to support the Rotary Club of Lethbridge’s Los Amigos initiative.

This Thursday, June 14, the school is hosting a benefit band concert, Hola! Music for Mazatlán, at 7 p.m. in the Paterson gymnasium.

“We are working in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Lethbridge and the Los Amigos project to raise money to send approximately 40 instruments to Mazatlán for a band program needing assistance,” said Karly Lewis, band director at Gilbert Paterson.

Rotary members will attend at the concert, along with the Grade 8 and stage band.

By a donation at the door of the school, local music lovers can support the instrument initiative, and enjoy an evening of entertainment.

The Los Amigos project is a joint venture among 12 Rotary clubs in District 5360, stretching from Kindersley to Pincher Creek and Calgary to Cardston. Since the project began in 2010, local municipalities have been encouraged to donate retired ambulances, fire trucks, handibuses and school buses to Los Amigos. Rotarians then drive the vehicles some 4,600 kilometres to Mazatlán, Mexico, where they are donated to local Mexican authorities judged to have the greatest need.
