NDP not prudent fiscal managers

LETTERS

-

Congratulations to Madam Phillips for being acclaimed as the NDP candidate in the next provincial election which, for many of us, cannot come too soon.

Madam Phillips correctly pointed out that the next provincial election will be about the type of government Albertans will choose. In her wide ranging salvo, she forgot to add that the next election will be about continuing with the NDP offer of hobbling Albertans with the NDP option of paying the maxed out line of credit with the Visa card or in choosing a government that wants to prudently review government spending as the United Conservative Party has indicated it must do because of the financial recklessness of the NDP. Free lightbulbs still have to be paid for.

The NDP are simply not prudent fiscal managers. Their introduction of a carbon tax has only penalized the oil and gas industry of which the NDP are suspicious. It has also burdened Albertans with additional taxes peddled as something virtuous. Their belief that diversifying the Alberta economy through subsidies to the renewable energy industry is hobbling future governments with their long-term contracts to enhance capacity to the electrical system. There is no shortage of capacity to the electrical system. Instead there is a shortage of energy that generates export revenue. A false economic claim has no virtue.

Madam Phillips also omits the limitation of choice she and her NDP comrades continue to try and throttle us with. From demonizing our free agency in practising our faith, by driving a wedge into who we love and in stoking envy by attacking the wealthy, the NDP continue to demonstrate they are bullies who are stuck reminiscing about the good old days of the social justice battles of the 1980s and 1990s. Greed and envy are poor starting points for creating public policy. Thankfully most of us have moved past the false imagery and fantasies the NDP continue to peddle.

There is indeed value for us to look forward in choosing the type of government we want after the next election. Bullies only fabricate tales, blame others for their failings and try to pick fights when there is no need to do so. I am certain Albertans want a government that is not so condescending and that cares for all Albertans and wants to help them in pursuing their dreams.

United Conservative Party nomination candidate for Lethbridge West
