LRDG rolling with Hellz Jezebel memorial

The Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild is ready to roll into another season.

That starts today as the LRDG hosts its Hellz Jezebel Memorial Tournament at the Lethbridge Curling Club at the ATB Centre.

The event, which runs until Sunday honours former LRDG member Jessica Olsen, whose derby name is the tournament’s moniker.

“We have a silent auction going and we have some vendors who will also be there, including a couple of skate shops from out of town,” said LRDG chair Tracy Reid. “We have five teams coming in from out of town.”

This weekend’s tournament will feature both the junior and adults teams competing in a round-robin.

“We’ll have four games (today) and on Sunday will have our bronze medal game and then we have a junior game at 1 p.m. and then we have two more gold medal games.”

The LRDG’s first game will take place today at 3 p.m.

The public is invited to come watch with tickets $15 for a weekend pass or $10 for the day.

“We get a lot of people that say they used to watch roller derby,” said Reid, who has been involved since 2010. “Derby nowadays is played on a flat track in those hits that we make, they’re real. They’re not set up. It is real and accidents happen, but for the most part it’s a lot of fun and it’s a big family. But when you get on the track the other team is definitely not your friend."

As they showcase their game on Sunday, the LRDG’s junior program has caught on.

“We have kids that come in their parents said they’ve tried soccer or hockey and it just wasn’t for them, they want to try something different,” said Reid. “We have both boys and girls and we’re close to 25 kids now between the ages of eight and 16.”

The LRDG’s first game of the season is July 7 at the ATB Centre when they take on the Rockyview Rollers.

Game time is 4 p.m. for the junior and 6 p.m. for the adults.

The LRDG’s next game is July 28 at the same time and location.
