Bulls rally past the Bombers
After a slow start to the season, the Lethbridge Bulls continue to find ways to win.
Friday’s win took a unique turn as the Bulls rallied to defeat the Brooks Bombers 9-8 in Western Major Baseball League play at Spitz Stadium.
With the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth and Jaret Semeniuk representing the winning run at third, Bulls right fielder Brett Mercier was hit by a pitch to walk in Semeniuk for the winning run and the victory that improves Lethbridge to 710.
The Bombers had gone up 87 in the top of the ninth before the Bulls rallied in their half of the final inning.
Lethbridge’s Ashton Roy and Brett Semeniuk walked to lead off before Jaret reached first on an error to third base.
After Darius Carter hit into a fielder’s choice in which Roy was thrown out at the plate, the Bulls tied the game when Hank Forrest singled to third to score Brett.
Then with the bases still loaded, Mercier was hit by Bombers pitcher Cale Thornton to score Jaret. The Bulls plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a 7-5 Bombers lead heading into the entertaining ninth inning. Hitting leadoff for Lethbridge, Forrest was 4for-6 with an RBI as the Bulls counted for 12 hits. Kaleb Warden was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI and Lachlan Mayo batted 2for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.
Jaret had a three-hit night, going 3-for-5 with two run scored.
Talon Derrick took the win for the Bulls, throwing two innings and surrendering one run on two hits and walking two.
The Bulls are in Brooks tonight and head to Medicine Hat Sunday to face the Western Division-leading Mavericks.
The team is back home Monday night when the Mavericks pay a visit to Spitz Stadium for the rematch at 7 p.m.
