Summer a great time for reading

- Paige McGeorge, teenbrarian LETHBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY www.lethlib.ca/teen, along with links to all our favourite summer reads. Enjoy the sun everyone!

School is out, the sun is shining, and it’s time to kick back in a hammock with a good book. Summer is a great time for reading, especially if you’re a teen. Young Adult ( YA) books are filled with adventure, change and romance, and the Lethbridge Public Library has something to suit every teen’s reading tastes.

So, pass this article along to the teens in your life, or maybe add a few of these suggestions to your own reading list!

Looking for love? The people you meet in YA books are often way better than those in real life. They’re gorgeous, talented, and attentive — or geeky, sweet, and devoted — whatever floats your boat.

That isn’t to say that the love stories in the books below will be all smooth sailing, as a little dreaming and scheming are what really make these great reads:

• Summer Days and Summer Nights — Stephanie Perkins

• No Love Allowed — Kate Evangelista

• When Dimple Met Rishi — Sandhya Menon

Romance not your cup of tea? Prefer adventure? Stories of summer camp, wilderness exploration, and world travel can fill your summer reading list:

• Lumberjanes — Noelle Stevenson

• Dan vs. Nature — Don Calame

• And We’re Off — Dana Schwartz

Two months off school may not seem like a long time, but it’s enough for everything to change.

Learning new things, growing apart from old friends and making new ones, and figuring out just who you want to be in the next phase of your life are common themes for summer YA books:

• This One Summer — Mariko Tamaki

• The Summer of Jordi Perez — Amy Spalding

• The Vast Fields of Ordinary — Nick Burd

When you need a break from your summer reading, and you want to get out and explore, grab a copy of the Library’s Teen Summer Library Challenge and see how many activities you can check off the list before Aug. 31.

Each challenge completed gets you an entry for the grand prize, which includes movie theatre gift cards, snacks, books, a bee house, community attraction passes, and cosy treats to perfect your reading nook. Teens can also sign up for Broadcast Bootcamp with CKXU, and attend a writing camp every Friday afternoon to build their creative skills. Full teen program information is available at
