Most activities produce GHG emissions

Re: GHG emissions from pipelines

Minister Phillips was recently cited by The Herald as claiming that “pipelines themselves produce no emissions” (“NDP defeats motion by Kenney,” by Tim Kalinowski, June 7).

Of course, the building of pipelines and their operation produces GHG emissions as do almost all human activities. The existing Kinder Morgan pipeline pumping stations are powered with electricity and the expansion will require more pumps and motors. GHG emissions will depend on the sources of electricity used in both B.C. and Alberta. Equipment and materials used to build the pipeline expansion will lead to additional emissions.

Perhaps Minister Phillips does not understand GHG emissions related to pipeline building and operation. Perhaps she was misinterpreted by Mr. Kalinowski. Which is it? Perhaps politicians and media should try a lot harder to provide accurate information.

However, there is another side to the abundance of science fiction like climate change propaganda from promoters like Al Gore and David Suzuki — and the media’s endless repetition over the past thirtysome years. The continuing lack of tangible data and facts to support their overblown visions of planetary doom may ultimately lead to public and political disbelief of the whole concept. Recent elections in the United States and Ontario suggest that voter rejection of climate change motivated initiatives is already underway.

Indeed, even our Lethbridge MLAs do not mention the climate leadership plan, carbon levy and renewable electricity projects in recent Herald articles and opinion pieces. Do they want voters to forget they imposed those costly ineffective initiatives on Albertans? It seems so!
