Mavericks strike early against Bulls

Lethbridge Bulls surrendere­d two runs in both the first and second innings, then watched Medicine Hat bat around in a fiverun seventh, as the Bulls were dropped 13-5 in Western Major Baseball League play Monday night at Spitz Stadium.

The Bulls fall to 7-12 with the loss, while Medicine Hat is 15-3 and winners of five straight.

Carson Johnson led the Mavericks with four hits and four RBI. He had two-run singles in the first and seventh innings.

David Salguiero had an RBI triple in the second inning as Medicine Hat built an early 4-0 lead. The Mavericks scored five runs on two hits in the seventh, then tacked on three additional runs in the ninth.

Colton Wright finished three-for-six for the winners, and Nolan Rattai was two-forsix with two runs scored and three RBI. Julien Ly also had a pair of the team’s 15 hits.

Trailing 5-0 in the third inning, the Bulls got on the board courtesy an RBI double by Hank Forrest. Brett Mercier added a solo home run in the fourth. Mercier finished two-for-four.

Dylan Borman added an RBI single in the seventh for the Bulls.

Jared Libke pitched six and two-third innings for the Mavericks to record the victory, allowing four runs on six hits.

Andrew Grieder surrendere­d eight runs — five earned — over six and one-third innings as the Lethbridge starter.

Bulls are in Okotoks tonight and return home Thursday to host the Swift Current 57s at 7 p.m. at Spitz Stadium.
