City needs new street maps

-

It has become apparent that the City of Lethbridge needs a new city street map. A lot of those north-south, east-west streets no longer go where you think. Since the city wisely installed the nice Bike Avenue (7 Avenue South), the streets no longer go where you might think and motor traffic may suddenly, without prior warning, change direction. There are no advance signs for motor traffic.

I was an avid cyclist before the City had any thoughts of making bike routes. It soon became apparent that being on a bicycle was not very safe, because motor vehicles gave little room. Making a bike route is great, but it becomes a nightmare to motorists and bike traffic does seldom obey traffic signs such as yield or stop signs. Enforcement of the cyclists is a must in the city. Riding on two wheels without a car body offers little protection against motorized vehicles. Helmets do little to protect broken limbs.

Let’s do it properly and not lead us on false errands. Put some signs up so we know where we are going, so we don’t waste fuel running in circles to get through the maze that was created for the cyclists.

Now the City can build the rest of the cycling trails and make it safe to travel by bicycle from north to south and east to west. Don’t stop with a short strip through town that doesn’t go anywhere before cyclist are forced back on roads. Walter Kerber
