Boulet family relieved

- Al Beeber LETHBRIDGE HERALD

For the families of those killed or injured in the April 6 crash of the Humboldt Broncos team bus and a semi-trailer in Saskatchewan, there can be no closure. At least not yet.

But the announcement by RCMP of charges against the Calgary trucker who hit the bus while the team was enroute to a playoff game in Nipawin, is a “significant step,” said Toby Boulet, whose son Logan was among those killed.

“But it’s a small step,” said Boulet Friday from the road in Saskatchewan.

We aren’t going to let anger destroy our peace,” he added.

The driver, 29-year-old Jaskirit Singh Sidhu, is facing 29 charges including 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

When Sidhu appears in court in Melfort, Sask. on Tuesday, Boulet said all the charges will be read out individually.

“We spoke with the RCMP and we agree this honours the victims. . .if he had been charged with a traffic violation, it would have destroyed our lives,” he added.

In a prepared statement, the Boulet family stated “our family is relieved that criminal charges have been laid against the truck driver. There are 29 individual criminal charges against him and we believe and agree that this gives individual faces to each victim and they are not just part of two groups of faceless people.

“We are confident the RCMP have done their due diligence in their investigation. We know this is just the beginning of another long haul in this horrible journey.”

Boulet said in his call to The Herald “this gives peace to this weekend.”

He added that “we know that nobody got up that morning with the intention to kill 16 people.”
