It seems like only yesterday that we were all bemoaning the latest snowfall, in typical southern Alberta fashion. However, all we had to do was wait and now we’re in full summer mode.

Before we know it the seasons will have changed yet again, bringing on gorgeous autumn colours, crisp leaves on the ground, and the Lethbridge Public Library’s The Word On The Street festival. This year will mark the eighth year of our literary festival, and promises another great lineup of authors, panel discussions, demonstrations and workshops, live music, activities, a marketplace and food trucks.

While the festival is still months away, our lineup of authors is already taking shape. One of our headlining authors this year is Joy Fielding. The author of over two dozen novels, Fielding’s works are popular throughout North America, and she is known for writing psychological thrillers where the plot twists keep coming to the very end. Fielding’s novel “Home Invasion” was the winner of the Golden Oak Award, and she was a nominee for an Evergreen Award with her novel “See Jane Run.” Her works have appeared on both the Globe and Mail and New York Times bestsellers lists.

Fielding’s latest novel, “The Bad Daughter,” was released in February. The story follows Robin, a therapist, who has been estranged from her father and his second wife (who used to be Robin’s best friend) and step-daughter. Robin returns to her hometown of Red Bluff after she receives a phone call informing her that her father, along with his family, have been the victims of a vicious attack following a home invasion and have been left in critical condition. As Robin tries to come to terms with the family she left behind, she begins to suspect that there is more to the events than a simple failed robbery attempt, as it seems everyone she encounters is hiding a secret. Readers will be sitting on the edge of their seats with suspense as they strive to uncover who is behind the attack.

Joy Fielding will be visiting the Lethbridge Public Library on Sept. 22 as part of The Word On The Street. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on this year’s festival, visit
