- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

In a showdown between starters, the Lethbridge Bulls came up just short.

The Bulls were blanked 2-0 by the Yorkton Cardinals in Western Major Baseball League play Sunday afternoon in Yorkton.

Lethbridge starter Luc Hebert threw six solid innings, but Cardinals hurler Hunter Sandord went the distance for the hosts, allowing only two hits, walking two and striking out nine as the Bulls go to 1-2 on their week-long road trip and 12-18 on the season.

Hebert tossed six shutout innings, allowing five hits, walking three and striking out nine in the no-decision.

Bulls reliever Tallon Derrick took the loss, going two innings and giving up two runs on two hits, walking one and striking out three.

The teams battled through six scoreless innings before the Cardinals scored the only two runs of the game in the seventh inning as the teams get ready for the rematch tonight in Yorkton at 7 p.m. Lachlan Mayo and Carter Witbeck provided the two Bulls hits. After tonight’s game, the Bulls road trip continues as they move on to Melville to face the Millionaires Tuesday and Wednesday before stopping in Okotoks Friday to take on the Dawgs. Lethbridge returns home to face the Moose Jaw Miller Express in a two game-set Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. In other WMBL action Sunday, the Medicine Hat Mavericks downed the Swift Current 57s 14-5 in Medicine Hat, while the Dawgs also earned a home win with an 11-7 win over the Edmonton Prospects. The Fort McMurray Giants handed the Brooks Bombers an 8-2 setback in Brooks. The Weyburn Beavers and the Regina Red Sox and the Millionaires and Miller Express were playing at press time. On Saturday, Bulls head coach Jesse Sawyer saw his seven-year WMBL home run record fall as Brooks’ Riley MacDonald went yard twice for his 18th and 19th home runs of the season. Sawyer had set the previous home run mark with 18 round-trippers in 2011.
