Highly-rated films here

- Leonard Binning

We are very excited to bring two acclaimed films to the city this weekend.

“Won’t You Be My Neighbor” — an exploration of the life, lessons and legacy of iconic children’s television host, Fred Rogers — comes with an astonishing 99 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is rated PG and has a running ✦minutes. time of 94

It will play daily at 1:20 and 7:15 p.m.

With Stampede just over, “The Rider,” based on a true story of a rising star in the rodeo circuit who suffers a tragic accident, should entertain. It carries its own weight with a 97 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is rated 14A with a coarse language warning. It shows nightly at 7:05 and 9:40 p.m.

“From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” takes an intimate look at America’s favourite neighbour: Mister Fred Rogers. A portrait of a man whom we all think we know, this emotional and moving film takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and the land of make-believe, and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.” — Focus Features.

“Based on a true story, ‘The Rider’ stars breakout Brady Jandreau as a once rising star of the rodeo circuit warned that his competition days are over after a tragic riding accident. Back home, Brady finds himself wondering what he has to live for when he can no longer do what gives him a sense of purpose: to ride and compete. In an attempt to regain control of his fate, Brady undertakes a search for new identity and tries to redefine his idea of what it means to be a man in the heartland of America.” — Mongrel Films.

Sometimes, simple critic ratings on Rotten Tomatoes can be misleading and I don’t always put my trust 100 per cent in them, but when both the critic and the audience scores are high, this generally bodes well for the entertainment value. As well, both of these films can be found on many top movie lists of 2018, and certainly deserve their time on the bg screen. I hope that you will take the opportunity to escape the heat and enjoy the fine cinematic offerings available locally. See you at the movie theatre!
