Taber wins concert through ‘One Horse Town’ contest

It’s been declared a “one-horse town.” But Taber is big enough to host a country music concert in September.

Following a cross-Canada competition, Taber becomes the second Alberta town to win a contest promoting U.S.-made Coors Banquet beer. So the MolsonCoors group will stage a Sept. 15 concert featuring country music performers Tim Hicks, Kira Isabella and Dallas Smith.

The brewers’ promotion officials announced Taber the 2018 “One Horse Town” winner this week. Other finalists — based on online votes and photo tags — were Williams Lake, B.C., Portage la Prairie, Man., Napanee, Ont., Nicolet, Que.. and Miramichi, N.B.

Last year’s winner was Moose Jaw, while Lacombe topped the first year’s poll in 2015. Votes for the towns named as finalists could be cast from anywhere in Canada.

“It really is just a numbers game,” Molson Coors brand public relations officer Jessica Teixeira said earlier this year, urging participants to vote day after day.

“We received nominations from every nook and cranny across Canada.”

One of the goals was to bring a concert to one of Canada’s smaller communities, she added.

“Often times with hosting big concerts, small towns are overlooked,” she said.

For residents of Taber, she pointed out, that could mean a three- to five-hour drive to a big city to take in a concert that catches their interest.

“We wanted to create a concert, building it up from the ground up, and promote small towns in Canada to bring the concert to.”
