Corn maze open for season
The Lethbridge Corn Maze opened for another year of family fun and delightful confusion Friday.
Owner Theo Slingerland has been acting maze-master for the past 19 years on his family farm about 20 minutes outside of Lethbridge near Park Lake Provincial Park. Slingerland says the maze’s popularity has grown each year over that time period.
“This is just clean, great fun for all ages,” Slingerland says. “There is something to do for everybody, and it is stress free mostly— unless you are the kind of person who gets frustrated when you are lost,” he adds with a chuckle.
Besides wanting those coming out to have a great time, Slingerland hopes the Lethbridge Corn Maze also serves as an educational experience for those not familiar with agricultural way of life in the region.
“Corn mazes are agro-tourism, that’s what they are called,” he explains. “So it’s a great way of drawing attention to the importance of agriculture for the tourists who come out here, and give them a chance to see a farm.”
Besides the maze itself, those coming out can interact with farm animals, take a ride on the “Cow Train” around the farmyard or have fun in the playground area. But the mazes, at the end of the day, are what it is all about, says Slingerland.
“The biggest challenge is to come up with a new design each year,” he states. “And once you get the design, you have to figure out how to make a maze out of it. We have several different mazes. We have the Big Maze, which is the hardest with no clues at all, the Kids Maze and we have a Trivia Maze. This year the Trivia Maze is about bees and honey.”
