A Lethbridge women charged in connection with a home invasion and assault on her elderly grandfather in Taber on July 11 is out on bail.

Stacey Leigh Carlson, 28, was asking Judge Derrick Redman to release her while she awaits trial on break/enter, robbery, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon charges.

Crown attorney Clayton Giles argued the violent nature of the alleged crime against a vulnerable person meant Carlson was a danger to the public, and should remain in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre until her trial.

Defence attorney Greg White argued Carlson had no prior convictions for violent crimes and that she is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and thus should be released.

Judge Redman adjourned the matter for consideration until Thursday morning so he could weigh the merits of both arguments more fully before making a final decision.

Carlson has been released on a $2,500 no cash bail with a number of conditions, including that she is to stay out of Taber unless passing through on Highway 3 or appearing for court.

Taber Police Service responded to a residence in the 5800 block of 52 Street in Taber at about 1:20 a.m. on July 11, where they found an 87-yearold man who had been severely beaten and robbed. The man was transported to Taber hospital and later to Chinook Regional Hospital. It was later determined that the victim was Carlson’s grandfather.

The matter was adjourned to Taber provincial court on Sept. 4.

Heinrich Froese, 22, was also charged in relation to the incident and remains in custody.
