Cricket grilled cheese? Bon appét it
Sure, I’ll try a cricket-filled grilled cheese sandwich from the Melttown truck.
If Kent Rosentreter (Rosie) from 106.7 Rock and CTV Lethbridge’s Alison MacKinnon can handle it, then I could, too.
Would I like a cookie dough burrito (with cotton candy used as a burrito shell) for dessert? Why not?
I normally would not have gone out of my way to try either of these items, but when it’s Whoop-Up Days in Lethbridge — anything goes.
On Tuesday afternoon, several members of the local media were invited to Exhibition Park to help judge the second edition of the Whoop-Up Days Fair Food Challenge. We were asked to try samples from nearly every food outlet and score them on: overall taste, presentation, creativity, marketability, crave ability, and quality of fry (if applicable).
The winner for most creative was Cookie Dough, best taste went to Arepas Ranch, and best deep fried was earned by Waffle Pops.
On Wednesday, those three winners provided the substance for the media food eating competition at Heritage Hall in the Pendleton Whiskey Saloon. Only three of us from Tuesday turned up, but it was a hearty competition to see who can eat the most food in one minute — four times over.
Kudos to Zayn Jinah from CTV Lethbridge for stepping up. And congratulations to Jake Bradley from Bridge City News for giving me a legitimate run for the title.
But the Whoop-Up Days eating championship was mine for the second consecutive year. Tough job, but someone has to do it.
My other top recommendations to try at Whoop-Up Days 2018 are the gnocchi and meatballs at Gustoso Italian Street, the burgers at Di’s Diner, and the Philly sandwich at Dylan’s Burgers.
