Fatal hitand-run investigated
Coaldale RCMP responded to a call just before 5 a.m. Sunday of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in a hit-andrun incident along Highway 5 just south of Lethbridge city limits.
A man was pronounced dead at the scene, while a woman was uninjured.
RCMP say that a 26-year-old man from the Blood Tribe reserve, and a female were walking south along the highway when a truck stuck the man and fled the scene.
Coaldale RCMP assumed the investigation and received valuable traffic control assistance from Lethbridge Police Service members until Volker Stevin staff could take over.
A Calgary RCMP traffic reconstruction was requested, and the Calgary medical examiners office was notified and provided direction. Blood Tribe Police Service assisted with the next of kin notification.
The truck involved is believed to be a red Dodge pickup, and RCMP are asking the public for assistance in identifying the vehicle involved. The truck has visible front-end damage with pieces missing from the vehicle.
Traffic was blocked on Highway 5 between Township Road 81 and 82 while RCMP officers investigated the situation, but was re-opened around 11 a.m.
RCMP are investigating why the pedestrians were walking on the highway, and to identify the vehicle involved. No further information on the incident has been released.
