College helps new students settle in
Lethbridge College saw a large number of new students on campus Tuesday for their annual New Student Orientation.
More than 1,300 students were on hand to get set up before classes begin, mingle with students and staff, as well as get their questions answered.
Shelley Carter-Rose, the college’s Director of Student Services, says the college wants to make new and existing students feel welcomed and has made some changes to their orientation to open more dialog with students.
“It is a real intentional approach by the college to be personable and be welcoming,” says Carter-Rose. “This year we changed up our orientation a bit and we held an expert panel, so we had four people answer questions from the audience, and it was an opportunity for students to have questions, and we did that instead of having a guest speaker. We thought that we would be a little more personable and cater to the students’ questions.”
Carter-Rose says the college’s size makes it easier for students to get to know people in different parts of the institution, even bringing board members around to the programs to welcome students.
“This is my favourite time of the year because everything is new and exciting,” says CarterRose. “Everyone has energy, it’s after the summer and people are meeting new or old friends and it makes me really like the new semester.”
Students moved into residence, got set up and met some friends over the weekend before beginning classes. The college will be hosting an Indigenous student ceremony on Sept. 11, and an international student welcome on Sept. 15, the same day as the LC’s Coulee Fest.
