It’s Library Card Sign-Up Month

- Greg Bobinec LETHBRIDGE HERALD

To mark the beginning of the new school year, the Lethbridge Public Library is kicking off Library Card Sign-Up Month throughout the month of September.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month has been held to encourage people to sign up or renew your existing card, and to remind people of the value that a card can bring — no matter your age or interests.

“The library is no longer just a building full of books,” says Robin Hepher, Chinook Arch Regional Library System CEO. “Today’s library meets you wherever you are. You can borrow audio books, TV shows, online courses and more using your phone or tablet. The library is still the best deal in town.”

The library welcomes everyone to their space, with or without a card. Programs are free to the public, as well as the Wi-Fi. However, a library card allows the holder to check out books, DVDs and video games. Some libraries even offer toys, board games, camping equipment and more.

Being a cardholder also gives you access to a wide array of online resources including audio books, eBooks, eMagazines and online newspapers. Cardholders can also access interactive language lessons, take online courses, download educational apps for children, or get homework done all for free.

“Chinook Arch is made up of 33 independent libraries that share their collections, expertise and resources,” says Hepher. “No matter where you live in southwestern Alberta, you have access to over 850,000 books, movies and more — and thousands of digital resources that you can access anytime, anywhere.”

If all of the resources didn’t entice you to sign up, this month the library will have a draw with everyone who signs up for a chance to win a new tablet, or a $100 Toys R Us gift card. For more information or to find a local library, visit chinookarch.ca.
