Rebels have a cause

a point this season. That’s 56 points-for and zero against.”

That included a 21-0 win over Canmore last weekend.

“They were ranked in the top-five in Tier IV provincially last year, so that was a good test,” said Jensen. “But it was this game we really had marked on our schedule. We wanted to see how we stack up. Catholic Central is two tiers above us, so to win this game was pretty special. I came in here with 26 guys and those boys gave it their all and we’re pretty happy with that.”

Friday night, that began with the pivot for the Rebels.

“Our quarterback, Mike Sawatsky, he’s a senior and his heart and soul was dialled into the game like nothing I’ve ever really seen,” said Jensen on his quarterback who had 227 yards passing for TDs and one rushing touchdown.

Taber running back Denzel Gross rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns, while Shawn Harris had five tackles.

“We have a good senior class, but we’ve got a lot of rookies on the team and some of the guys are first-year Grade 11. One (Harris) of them was starting at middle linebacker today and he had a couple of tackles and a forced fumble.”

Defensive end Corny Howatt added four tackles, one sack and two fumble recoveries for the Rebels.

“Most teams would never play him as a lineman,” said Jensen. “He’s actually the thirdfastest kid on our team, but he’s absolutely electric and plays line both ways and today.”

The Rebels return home to host Calgary Rundle College in exhibition play next Saturday at 1 p.m.

They return to SAHSFL play the following week when they tangle with the Chinook Coyotes Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at the U of L Stadium.

In other high school football action Friday, the LCI Rams were defeated 24-0 by the Calgary Saint Francis Browns in Raymond at Comets Stadium.

In the late game at the U of L in front of roughly 1,000 spectators, the Coyotes topped the Winston Churchill Bulldogs 22-19.
