Kodiaks soccer teams pick up points

MEN’S TEAM BEATS BRONCOS, WOMEN EARN A TIE

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

After a pair of home losses Saturday, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s soccer teams rebounded with some road points.

The Kodiaks men’s team bounced back from a tough season-opening loss to post a 2-1 win over the Olds Broncos in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play Sunday in Olds that puts them at 1-1.

Meanwhile, the Kodiaks women’s team scored their first goal of the season and earned their first point courtesy a 1-1 draw with the Broncos that puts Lethbridge at 0-1-1 this season.

Had they not hit four crossbars, the women’s team could have joined the men’s Kodiaks in coming home with a win.

“The girls played amazing today,” said Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey. “After yesterday’s tough game they rebounded in great fashion. They dominated the game. We should have come out of there with points quite easily.”

The Broncos took the lead in the 30th minute, but the Kodiaks pulled even a little under 10 minutes later on a header from Bryce Sherring.

“Hanna (Luskey) took a free kick and Bryce was going in and headed it in to tie it up,” said Carey.

Meanwhile, the Kodiaks men put Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the SAIT Trojans behind them as Jimmy Bukuru scored in the first half and Wilson Ntignee added the eventual game-winner in the 40th minute. “The guys played well,” said Carey. “It was a tough place to come and play with the way Olds plays. They like to play the long ball, so it’s tough to get into the fluidity of the game.”

Kodiak Nathan Burton set up the first Lethbridge goal that gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

“He found Jimmy for a nice tap-in,” said Carey.

After the Broncos tied it four minutes later, Ntignee continued to find the back of the net like he did last year, blazing a shot from the 18-yard-line into the bottom corner.

That was it for the scoring as the teams played through a scoreless second half.

Kenzel Aarts-Roman had two shot attempts and one shot on goal to earn Player of the Game in his second ACAC game.

“He was up and down the line the whole game,” said Carey.

Bukuru and Ntignee were also the goal scorers in the Kodiaks loss to the Trojans on Saturday .

The Kodiaks return to action Sunday when they travel to Medicine Hat to face the Rattlers.

The teams remain on the road Sept. 22 and 23 with games in Lloydminster against the Lakeland College Rustlers and Red Deer, respectively, and return home Sept. 29 to take on Olds in a rematch.
