- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby and soccer teams were handed losses In Canada West play on the West Coast Friday night.

The Horns rugby team was defeated 22-7 by the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in Vancouver, while the soccer team was shut out 4-0, also by the Thunderbirds.

The loss drops the rugby team to 0-2 on the season, while the Pronghorns soccer team is 0-3.

In the rugby game, fourth-year winger Hailey Driscoll had the sole try for the Pronghorns.

The teams kept it close with the Thunderbirds nursing a 5-0 lead at the half with a try in the 28th minute.

There was scary moment and a lengthy delay just before halftime when Thunderbirds first-year lock Emma Feldinger was injured in a collision. She remained down for nearly half an hour as extra precautions were taking with her upper body injury before paramedics arrived with a stretcher.

The Pronghorns responded with some heavy pressure to start the second half, but UBC was able to hold the visitors at bay and off the scoreboard.

After those key stands, the Thunderbirds replied with a pair of tries near the 60th minute for a 17-0 lead and went up 22-0 in the 73rd minute on a interception.

But Driscoll foiled UBC’s shutout bid with a run down the left sideline for the untouched try in the 76th minute. Caitlin Sears added the convert.

“We had missed chances early in the second half to score tries, then we gave up some tries,” said Pronghorns head coach Neil Langevin. “It was evenly matched, but our execution was lacking.”

The Pronghorns wrap up their West Coast trip in Victoria Sunday against the Vikes. Game time is 12:30 p.m., local time.

The Pronghorns women’s soccer team duelled the Thunderbirds to a scoreless draw at the half before UBC rang up four second-half goals, including a Lethbridge own goal in the 48th minute to open the scoring.

UBC outshot the Pronghorns 9-3 as Horns goaltender Chelsey Galbraith made four saves in 85 minutes before backup Hanna Quinn came in late, making one save.

The Pronghorns are in Victoria today to face the Vikes. Game time is 6 p.m., local time.
