The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Southern Alberta Chapter announced its 2018 “Inspiring Philanthropy Award” honourees at a special press conference at city hall on Thursday.

This year’s winners, which were nominated by community members and local organizations for their charitable efforts, include: Cox Financial in the category of Small Business; Lethbridge Iron Works in the Corporate category; Priscilla and Robert Janes in the Indigenous category; Art and Mary Crooks in the Individual/Family category; both the Taber Charity Auction and the local chapter of the Canadian Home Builders Association under Philanthropic groups; and Dhillon School of Business Integrated Management Experience for the Youth category.

Jess Fehr, co-chair of the Inspiring Philanthropy Awards, said while many of these groups and individuals recognized may not have sought out such recognition on their own, they were certainly worthy and had their champions in the community at large.

“We hope (by having these awards) we are creating this culture of philanthropy in our city, which is something that’s very important,” said Fehr. “And it is not always monetary. It’s time, talent and treasure. So somebody who is volunteering their time is just as valuable as someone giving their money, because you are taking that time out of your day. Or you are taking that time out of your family time, and everything, in order to give back to your community.”

The AFP Southern Alberta Chapter will host its fourth annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon on Nov. 15 to honour the recipients of the Inspiring Philanthropy Awards. The event takes place at the Signature Sandman Lethbridge Lodge. Tickets for the luncheon can be purchased online at Eventbrite or
