Horns women’s soccer team draws with Wesmen

MEN’S TEAM LOSES 5-0 IN VICTORIA ON SUNDAY

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s soccer team got their first goals and point of the Canada West season.

It didn’t start on a winning note as the Horns were downed 4-1 by the Manitoba Bisons Saturday in Winnipeg, but the Pronghorns earned their second goal of the season and a point as well as Lindsay Amatto scored in the 84th minute to secure a 1-1 draw with the Winnipeg Wesmen for a 0-1-1 weekend.

On the men’s side, the Pronghorns were handed a 5-0 loss by the Victoria Vikes Sunday in Victoria to finish an 0-2 B.C. road trip following a close 1-0 loss to the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday in Prince George.

In the women’s game Saturday, the Bisons (21-2) scored twice in each half on their way to the win.

But Hailey Waterhouse ended the Horns fourgame goalless drought, scoring in the 57th minute to cut the Bisons lead to 3-1 before Manitoba added one more to round out the scoring.

Pronghorns goaltender Chelsey Galbraith made three saves in the loss.

In the weekend closer on Sunday, the Wesmen held a 1-0 lead into the late stages of the game before Amatto broke the goose egg in the 84th minute to give Lethbridge their first point of the season.

Amatto led the Pronghorns with five shots on goal. Nicole Stahl, Raeleen Vanden dungen and Kaleigh Harris had two each.

Hanna Quinn got the start in goal for Lethbridge, making three saves.

The Horns return to the University of Lethbridge Stadium next weekend.

On Saturday they welcome the Regina Cougars to town at noon before hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday, also at noon.

After the loss in Prince George, the Horns men headed to Vancouver Island Sunday to face the Vikes

Victoria held a 1-0 lead at the half before striking for four in the second half as the Pronghorns fall to 0-7-1 this season.

Pronghorns fourth-year goaltender Nolan French was called upon to make eight saves in the opening half, most of them of high-quality chances.

But the hosts were able to break through in the second half to notch the win that improves them to 3-3-3.

“It was just a really flat performance,” said Pronghorns head coach Randy Bardock. “We have no excuses, but I think the travel really caught up to us. We responded better in the second half with some good attacking moments, but it was a disappointing effort today.”

Jaden Veluw and David Velazquez each had one shot on goal for Lethbridge.

The Pronghorns men remain on the road next weekend when they head to Edmonton.

They play the Alberta Golden Bears (7-0-2) Saturday and the MacEwan Griffins (3-5-1) Sunday.

“We’ll look to regroup for next weekend,” said Bardock.
