French, McKee earn Horns AOW

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

A goaltender who made several impressive stops in a losing cause and a rugby player who turned in a gamebreaking play have been selected as the University of Lethbridge’s Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.

Getting the nod as the Male Athlete of the Week winner this week is Pronghorns soccer goaltender Nolan French, while rugby player Carolyn McKee is the Female Athlete of the Week.

As the Pronghorns men’s soccer team searches for their first win of the Canada West season at 0-7-1, French, a fourth-year veteran, has been solid throughout.

On last weekend’s road trip, French put up eight saves in a close 1-0 loss to the UNBC Timberwolves Friday in Prince George.

On Sunday in Victoria against the Vikes, French had another 11 saves in a 5-0 loss. French has played every game for the Pronghorns this season and is in second in saves in Canada West with 50 saves in eight games. The Horns are back on the road this weekend as they head to Edmonton to take on the Prairie Division-leading Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday and the MacEwan Griffins Sunday.

McKee played a key part on the Pronghorns women’s rugby team earning their first win of the season following a 38-34 win over the Alberta Pandas Saturday that improves the Horns to 1-3.

In the 71st minute, the third-year fullback stole the ball near midfield and raced downfield to score her first try of the season and seal the win over the Pandas and keep their playoff hopes alive.

She was once again dominant on defence in Saturday’s win.

The Pronghorns will continue the fight for their post-season lives as they travel to Calgary this Sunday to take on the defending Canada West champion Calgary Dinos.
