Islanders sign Sbisa to one-year deal

A former member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes is headed to New York.

The New York Islanders announced Monday they had signed defenseman Luca Sbisa to a one-year contract.

The 28-year-old blueliner had two goals and 14 points in 30 games last season with the Vegas Golden Knights.

He added four assists in 12 postseason games to help Vegas advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Philadelph­ia Flyers selected Sbisa in the first round and 19th overall in the 2008 National Hockey League Draft.

He's played 495 career regular-season games with the Flyers, Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks and Vegas scoring 18 goals and 102 points.

Sbisa has eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 32 career Stanley Cup playoff games.

Born in Ozieri, Italy, Sbisa grew up in Switzerlan­d and has represente­d the Swiss at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, two World Championsh­ips and two World Junior Championsh­ips. He played for Team Europe at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

He played with the Hurricanes in 2007-08 — his first season in North America — scoring six goals and 33 points in 62 games.

Sbisa played 18 games with the Canes in 200809, scoring four goals and 15 points and another 17 games in 2009-10 in which he put up 18 points in 17 games before being traded to the Portland Winterhawk­s.
