A Community Issues Committee meeting is planned in council chambers for 11 a.m. today by the Executive Leaders Coalition on Opioid Use.

The event is intended to provide information from service providers to help inform the upcoming community consultation process and the work of the ad hoc committee to develop a community-driven drug policy. Additionally, it hoped the event will hash out existing efforts and resources in the city and identify gaps in resources available locally.

The coalition has identified four pillars in dealing with the drug issue in the city, including treatment, harm reduction, enforcement, and prevention and education.

It is expected that Thomas Mountain, director for AHS Addiction and Mental Health in the South Zone, will speak on treatment options and issues. Jill Manning, managing director at ARCHES, is set to speak on harm reduction. LPS Chief Rob Davis is set to speak on enforcement.

Following the CIC, the regular meeting of city council is expected to begin at 1:30 p.m. in council chambers.

Michael Cormican, president of the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch No. 4, is expected to inform council on upcoming events for the organization, including Poppy Tag Day on Oct. 27, a request to declare Nov. 5 to 11 as “Remembrance Week,” with a temporary renaming of 4 Avenue between 9 Street and 11 Street South for the duration of Remembrance Week.

Robin Hepher, CEO of the Chinook Arch Regional Library System, is expected to provide an update on the role of Chinook Arch and the services it provides to the Lethbridge Public Library and local residents.

Sarah Amies, chair for Lethbridge Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination, and Amanda Jensen, Community Services co-ordinator, are expected to provide an update on CCMARD activities as well as progress in the Building Bridges: A Welcoming and Inclusive Lethbridge Community Action Plan which was approved by council in 2011.

Council is expected to disband the Airport Committee made up of a coalition of Lethbridge County and city council. Additionally, it is expected to finalize the Terms of Reference for the Airport Transition Committee and appoint Mayor Chris Spearman, Coun. Belinda Crowson and Coun. Jeff Carlson.

City council meetings are held bi-weekly in council chambers at city hall. The meetings begin at 1:30 p.m. and are open to the public.
