It’s decision day for the Hurricanes
2020 MEMORIAL CUP HOST TO BE REVEALED TODAY IN CALGARY
It’s Memorial Cup bid day and the buzz is on in Lethbridge.
Later this afternoon, the Lethbridge Hurricanes, their fans and residents alike will find out if the 2020 Memorial Cup is coming to town.
The Hurricanes, along with the two other Western Hockey League finalists, Kelowna Rockets and Kamloops Blazers, will make their presentation in front of a bid committee in Calgary with the official word of who will get the Canadian Hockey League championship coming down at 3:40 p.m.
The announcement will be live streamed on the CHL Facebook page.
In the Canes camp, Bill Reddick, chairman of the Lethbridge bid committee, is feeling good about his group’s presentation on behalf of the organization and southern Alberta.
“We are quite excited,” said Reddick from Calgary Tuesday afternoon. “We think we put a really good bid together. We’ve put together a competitive bid.”
And it’s taken all hands on deck to give Lethbridge a shot of landing its first Memorial Cup.
“There are a lot of man hours that have gone into this,” said Reddick. “There has been a lot of people around us, the club, the Enmax Centre and lots of people volunteering their time to put us in this position.”
Lethbridge WHL teams have competed in two Memorial Cups, the first in 1983 as the Broncos and again in 1997 when the Hurricanes advanced to the final, but lost 5-1 to the Hull Olympiques. Now, the city is buzzing to bring the Cup here. “It’s been great,” said Reddick. “Walking down the aisle in the grocery store or stopping to chat about it, the excitement is there. They’re nervous about it because they want to make it happen, but they’re still excited about the possibility of it coming to Lethbridge. It’s been overwhelming, it’s been great.”
