Kodiaks soccer teams land key points

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Score a 12-point weekend for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s soccer teams.

As the continue to battle for a playoff spot, both Kodiaks teams helped their causes with 2-0 weekends during Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play last weekend.

The Kodiaks kicked off the weekend with wins over the Ambrose Lions as the men topped the Lions 6-1 and the women prevailed 3-1 at the Servus Sports Centre.

On Sunday, the teams completed the 2-0 weekend when the Medicine Hat Rattlers paid a visit.

The Kodiak women blanked the Rattlers 4-0 before the men came on and registered a 2-1 win.

With the wins, the Kodiaks women pick up six important points and improve to 5-3-1, good for sole possession of third place and the final playoff spot in the ACAC South Division. That puts them three points up on the Olds Broncos (4-3-1), who have a game in hand on the Kodiaks and three points back of the second place Red Deer Queens (6-1-1).

The wins also improve the Kodiaks men to 5-3-1 and in third place in the South, three points up on the 4-4-1 Rattlers and one point behind the 5-1-2 Red Deer Kings.

In Sunday’s game, Vicki Noronha had the hat trick for the Kodiaks and Christine Moser added the other Lethbridge goal.

Paige Gattafoni stopped three shots to earn the shutout.

Charles Igwebuike scored in the 75th minutes for the gamewinner in the men’s game. Wilson Ntignee added the other Kodiaks goal to erase an early Rattlers lead.

Kodiaks goaltender Kohl Wandyka made two saves in the win.

The Kodiaks hit the road to Calgary Saturday to face the Lions.

The teams are back home Oct. 20 when they host Red Deer.
