Pronghorns post wins in Manitoba

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team wrapped up a weekend trip to Manitoba with a 3-1 effort.

Completing four games in as many days, the Horns were edged 79-78 by York University in exhibition play Monday afternoon in Edmonton.

The rest of the trip was a winning endeavour as the Pronghorns began the weekend with a 103-86 win over the Brandon Bobcats Thursday in Brandon.

The Horns followed that with two more wins in Winnipeg, a 103-99 decision over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday and a 98-79 win over the University of Manitoba Bisons Sunday.

On Monday against York University, the Pronghorns trailed 46-37 at the half before pushing back in the second half, outscoring York 20-19 in the third quarter and 21-14 in the fourth before falling one point short in their comeback bid.

Colton Gibb paced the Pronghorns with 23 points. Mike Pierzchala and Zac Overwater added 15 and 14 points, respective­ly. Overwater also had six rebounds and three blocks.

Gibb and Marko Vekic had three steals each.

In Sunday’s win over the Bisons, Pierzchala and Gibb topped the 20-point mark with 26 and 23 points.

Overwater hit double digits with 15 points and Kyle Peterson added 13.

Eric Pierce hauled in nine rebounds.

Peterson had five assists and Gibb put up five steals.

The Pronghorns head to Montana for one more preseason go-around. They’re in Helena Oct. 19 to face Carroll College and travel to Great Falls the next day to play the University of Providence.

The Horns begin their Canada West season Nov. 2 and 3 when they host the MacEwan University Griffins at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
