Pronghorns women’s hockey hosts home opener

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

After opening with a split on the West Coast, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey ice their home opener tonight.

The Pronghorns welcome the Regina Cougars to town for a two-game Canada West series tonight and Saturday at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Game time is 7 p.m. tonight and 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Horns head into the weekend 1-1 following a split with the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend in Vancouver, including a 2-0 shutout win in which Alicia Anderson registered 41 saves.

The team looks to get back above the .500 mark with the Cougars — also 1-1 — in town.

Fourth-year Pronghorn Tricia Van Vaerenbergh paced Lethbridge with two goals last weekend, while Kyra Greig added the other goal.

The Horns penalty kill killed off all 11 Thunderbirds power plays, while Lethbridge’s power play clicked on two of 11 chances.

Last year, the Cougars won three of four games versus the Pronghorns, one being an overtime win.

Both games will also be streamed live on

The Pronghorns will remain at home next weekend when they face the Saskatchewan Huskies.

On the men’s side, the Horns return to Canada West play as they head to Regina to face the Cougars.

Last weekend, the Pronghorns trekked to the U.S. to face Western Michigan University and Ferris State University Saturday and Sunday, losing 4-1 and 5-2, respectively.

Now, the 0-2 Pronghorns hit the road in search of their first Canada West win of the season with the 0-1-1 Cougars waiting in Regina.

Pronghorns first-year forward Landon Gross scored twice in the team’s home-openers Sept. 28 and 29 against the Thunderbirds.

Fellow rookies Michael Grant and Jordan Roy also scored in the home opening weekend.

The Pronghorns were 1-for-11 on the man advantage against the Thunderbirds and surrendered five power-play goals over the two games.

Lethbridge remains on the road next weekend when they head back to Saskatchewan to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies Oct. 19-20.

Their next home games is Oct. 26 when they Calgary Dinos visit Nicholas Sheran Arena at 7 p.m.
