Kodiaks women open with a win

MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM TOPPED BY SAIT

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s basketball teams went 1-1 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season openers Saturday night.

The Kodiaks women kicked off their season at 1-0 thanks to a 58-46 win over the SAIT Trojans at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium, but the Kodiaks men were unable to make it a sweep for the hosts, falling 103-89 to the Trojans.

In the women’s game, the Kodiaks held the Trojans to 23 points in each half on their way to the win.

Lethbridge led 31-23 at the half before pouring in another 18 points in the third quarter.

Madi Gladstone led the Kodiaks with 12 points and five steals.

Matlin McMurray had eight points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Juhee Anderson, Shayna Mathison and Amy Berryman added seven points.

Anderson also had eight rebounds and six assists.

Courtney Peterson had 11 rebounds for the Kodiaks.

Orin Porter Jr. and Lincoln Anderson led the Kodiaks with 23 points each in the men’s game, but the Trojans struck for 31 points in the third quarter and 25 more in the fourth to pull away.

Porter Jr. also had nine rebounds and Anderson had eight.

Nick Gibb came off the bench to bucket 14 points for the Kodiaks, while Skylar Thompson added 10 points off the bench.

Michael Clemons had 17 assists for Lethbridge.

The Kodiaks are off to Calgary Saturday when they take on the Ambrose Lions.

The teams are back at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium Oct. 26 when the Medicine Hat Rattlers come to town.
