Members of the Lethbridge Library Stitching Divas decorate a Christmas tree with hand-made knitted ornaments for a raffle to raise money for the athletes competing in the Alberta Winter Games in 2019.

The Rotary Club Lethbridge Sunrise, in partnership with L’Arche Lethbridge and the Lethbridge Stitching Divas have launched a raffle to help raise funds so L’Arche clients can attend the Alberta Winter Games in 2019.

The Library Stitching Divas is a knitting and stitching community group that meets at the Lethbridge Library every week to share ideas, skills, enjoy time together and learn about the craft of knitting, crochet and other needle arts.

The Project Christmas Tree raffle is their way to expand their contribution to the community, by decorating a miniature Christmas tree with 127 hand-made ornaments that took months to stitch together, valued at $500, and selling tickets to help raise money for L'’Arche.

“The Christmas tree started as a notion last December, and one of the other ladies proposed that we decorate a tree with hand-made clothing ornaments and the idea was that we would organize a raffle to raise money for a charity,” says Kathy Nielson, Library Stitching Diva member.

“We decided that all of the proceeds will go to the L’Arche Lethbridge, a very small society here in Lethbridge that helps individuals with brain injuries and these funds will be going towards travel expenses for the Alberta Winter Games, so it will provide some individuals with the opportunity to travel and hopefully have a wonderful experience as well.”

L’Arche Lethbridge is a facility where they make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships by fostering an environment that responds to needs of their members by engaging diverse cultures.

The Rotary Club Lethbridge will be selling the raffle tickets at various events over the next couple months throughout the city for $5 each. The draw date for Project Christmas Tree will take place on Dec. 8, at Immanuel Lutheran Church during the performance of “It’s A Wonderful Life.” More information about the services provided at L’Arche is available at larche.ca.
