Canes trounce the Tigers

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Asix-goal third period ensured the Lethbridge Hurricanes weren’t saddled with a winless weekend.

The Canes rang up the goal light late en route to an 8-3 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers in Western Hockey League play Saturday night at the Enmax Centre.

Twenty-four hours after the Hurricanes coughed up a 3-1 lead in the final two minutes to lose 4-3 in overtime to the Tigers in Medicine Hat, they made sure no leads disappeared in the rematch Saturday night. They also overcame a 3-2 deficit after the second period.

With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 5-4-1-2 on the season as the team gets ready to host the Brandon Wheat Kings Tuesday night.

Ty Kolle and Nolan Jones — with his first career WHL goal — handed the Hurricanes a 20 lead after the first period, but goals from Ryan Jevne, Elijah Brown and Tyler Preziuso gave Medicine Hat a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. It didn’t last long. Lethbridge’s Dylan Cozens netted his seventh of the season 1:01 into the third period to make it 3-3 and Zachary Cox tallied what stood up as the game-winner 2:08 later with his second of the season.

The Canes kept the pedal down the rest of the way as Jadon Joseph, Logan Barlage, Jordy Bellerive and Taylor Ross rounded out the third period assault that chased Tigers starter Jordan Hollett after Bellerive’s goal.

Hurricanes goaltender Reece Klassen was also busy, stopping 39 of 42 shots.

Kolle added two assists for a three-point night, while Ross, Bellerive, Joseph and Cozens each added one assist.

The Canes power play was 3-for-4, while the Tigers were 0-for-4.

Tuesday night’s game against the Wheat Kings is 7 p.m. at the Enmax Centre.
