Transit changes this week

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Lethbridge Transit is introducing a second round of changes as a response to a ridership increase, following the successful introduction of the new Universal Transit Pass (UPass) at the University of Lethbridge.

After gathering further data following the initial changes, implemented earlier this month, Lethbridge Transit is modifying the times of peak service and adding frequency to better meet demand, the City of Lethbridge said Friday.

Starting Monday, the following changes were implemented weekdays between 7:45 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.:

• Route 32 will continue to provide 10 minutes frequency service as introduced in early October.

• Route 36 will run on 15 minutes frequency instead of the current 30 minutes service.

• A new route – Route 10 – City Centre – Columbia – University will complement the service between the University terminal and downtown.

• In combination, routes 10 and 12 will provide 15-minute bidirectional service between University and downtown during the peak morning hours.

These changes are being closely monitored on a trial basis, the City says, adding that further changes may be required in an effort to manage increased ridership.

Since the introduction of the UPass in September, the ridership in west Lethbridge has increased approximately 34 per cent. The UPass fee is included in tuition costs for all students enrolled at the U of L.

The pass provides students with unlimited access to local transit during each term they are registered for classes.
