Work continues on new Legacy Park

The skateboard park remains a hub of youthful energy.

Legacy Park’s pickleball and basketball courts remain active as well, while above-normal fall temperatures prevail.

But there are more attractions in the works for the City’s new regional park.

Design work is underway for a new community use building, reports parks manager David Ellis.

It’s scheduled for construction next year, along with the City’s latest spray park. Additional parking will be provided nearby.

The Lethbridge Horticultural Society has begun work on its ornamental garden at the park’s northwest corner, Ellis says. Building a waterfall and pond will be the first of many projects the group is proposing.

Two non-league, community use sports fields should also be ready for play next summer. A large backstop is already in place for the park’s ball diamond. And the turf for the soccer field, just east of the skateboard park, should be ready for action as well.

“We will continue to water and fertilize the new grass to get it going as soon as possible,” Ellis says — so long as warm fall weather holds.

Next year, “We’ll work with the weather to get the fields open as soon as we can.”

What visitors won’t see next year, Ellis points out, is fields full of weeds. While they served to keep the soil in place as the seeded grass took root, their days are numbered.

“Most of the weeds there are annuals,” so winter should take care of that.

“The serious ones will get sprayed out when the grass is strong enough,” if any weeds survive the winter.

Adds Ellis, “When the grass fills in, the weeds won’t have room to grow.”

And next spring, any bare patches will be seeded once again.
