Horns to clash with Dinos

After 0-2 weekends, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s and women’s hockey teams are at home and on the road this weekend.

The Pronghorns look to get back into the win column starting tonight as they clash with the Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series in Canada West play.

The men start it at home tonight at 7 at Nicholas Sheran before the Horns women return home Saturday to host Calgary, also at 7 p.m.

Prior to puck drop tonight, the Pronghorns men will will retire former captain Brock Hirsche’s number 10 jersey.

Hirsche passed away this spring following a battle with cancer. The Pronghorns will unveil a banner that will hang in Nicholas Sheran Arena.

After an 0-2 weekend in Saskatoon against the Huskies, the Pronghorns (2-4-0) return to Nicholas Sheran Arena for the first time in nearly a month.

Three Pronghorns are tied for the team lead in points thus far. Freshmen Landon Gross and Jordan Roy are tied with Sam McKechnie with four points. Gross has three goals, while McKechnie leads the Pronghorns with three assists. Roy has two goals and two assists.

Special teams have been a struggle for the Horns, ranking last in both power play and penalty killing.

The power play has only scored twice in 21 opportunit­ies, while Lethbridge has surrendere­d 10 power-play goals in 24 chances.

After opening the season with a win over the UBC Thunderbir­ds, the Pronghorns women (1-4-0-1) have lost five straight games but earned a single point in a 1-0 overtime loss to the Saskatchew­an Huskies Friday.

The weekend features the two lowest scoring teams. The Horns have seven goals in six games, while the Dinos have four goals and been shut out in their last two games.

Pronghorns fourth-year goaltender Alicia Anderson leads Canada West in total saves with 183 in five games. She also has a 1.83 goalsagain­st average and a 0.951 save percentage.

Offensivel­y, Lethbridge is led by Tricia Van Vaerenberg­h, who has three goals and one assist.
