A Lethbridge man arrested after a police standoff late last year hopes to resolve his charges without going to trial.

Lethbridge lawyer Art Larson told court Monday that resolving the matter will avoid what he predicts could be a lengthy trial for his client, Jaysun George Sinclair. He said they should know by his next court hearing Nov. 19 whether they will resolve the case or prepare for trial.

Sinclair, 46, was charged with a number of firearms offences Nov. 26, 2017, after a four-hour standoff at a northside home. Police had responded to reports that a man with a gun was uttering threats to people at the home.

Armed with a search warrant, police reportedly found 11 firearms — two of them loaded — as well as rounds of ammunition and two prohibited ammunition magazines.

Sinclair is charged with unlawful use of a firearm, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, two counts of careless use or storage of a firearm, four counts of unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon, assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and resisting a peace officer.

The accused, who personally appeared in court Monday, was granted bail Dec. 19 on several conditions, including posting $2,000 cash, continuing to reside in a specified residence, and observing an 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew. He is also prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, and he must abstain from consuming alcohol.
