Accused in downtown attack appears in court
A 38-year-old Lethbridge woman accused of assaulting a 70-year-old man last week during an attack in broad daylight, made a brief appearance in Lethbridge provincial court Monday.
Stacy Leah Dawn White Man appeared by closed-circuit TV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, where she has been remanded since her arrest last Wednesday.
Her lawyer, Claudia Connolly of Lethbridge, told court she still needs disclosure from the Crown’s office, and requested an adjournment to Thursday.
At about 12:51 p.m. Wednesday police and EMS responded to a report of an assault after a woman attacked the elderly man who had been walking in the 300 block of 7 Street South. The woman ran up to the man and accused him of having her money. She then swung her purse and struck him in the face.
The force of the blow cut the victim’s upper lip, which required multiple stitches to close. The woman left the area and entered a nearby bank where she threatened staff before she was arrested.
Police said the accused and victim do not know each other, and police believe the woman was impaired by methamphetamine at the time of the incident.
White Man faces several charges, including assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, threats to cause death or bodily harm, resisting a peace officer and two counts of breach of a recognizance.
