Broncos stun Canes

The Lethbridge Hurricanes were unable to make a lategame lead stand. The Hurricanes were downed 5-4 in overtime by the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League play Friday night in Swift Current as the Broncos earned their second win of the season.

The Canes held a 4-3 lead late in the third period on a power-play goal by Ty Kolle, but Swift Current replied with a man advantage marker of their own from Connor Horning with 35 seconds to go before the hosts completed the comeback 2:59 into overtime on Noah King’s second of the season.

The loss drops the Hurricanes to 7-5-2-2.

Calen Addison and Noah Boyko gave the Hurricanes a 20 lead late in the first period, but the Broncos cut that lead to one with seconds left in the first period on a goal from Max Patterson.

Jason Joseph put the Hurricanes back up by a pair 12:42 into the second with his eighth of the season — on the power play — that extends his points streak to 10 games.

Swift Current cut the lead back to one less than one minute later on a goal from Andrew Fyten for a 3-2 Lethbridge lead after 40 minutes.

It stayed that way until late in the third when back-to-back power plays allowed the Canes to a take a 4-3 lead on Ty Kolle’s fourth of the season with 2:46 left in regulation.

But with Boyko off for tripping in the final 1:24 the Broncos scored in the final minute as Horning forced overtime with 35 seconds left in regulation.

Swift Current completed the comeback as King scored 2:59 into overtime.

The Hurricanes outshot the Broncos 46-40.

Addison added an assist for a two-point night and Logan Barlage had a pair of helpers.

Canes goaltender Reece Klassen stopped 35 of 40 shots as the Hurricanes power play went 2-for-4.

The Hurricanes return to the Enmax Centre Friday at 7 p.m. against the Calgary Hitmen.
